Anndee Hochman is a journalist, essayist, storyteller and teaching artist who listens intimately, questions bravely, and documents this stunning, broken world. Her book, Parent Trip: Unexpected Roads to Form a Family—a collection of her Philadelphia Inquirer "Parent Trip" columns interwoven with personal essays on parenthood—is due out in February 2026 from Temple University Press. Her current project is a YA novel, My Plural Is People, in which two teenagers search for the truth about their families. Anndee's work has also appeared in Broad Street Review, Poets & Writers, O, the Oprah Magazine and other venues. She teaches writers of all ages to flex their voices in poetry, memoir and creative non-fiction. Anndee Hochman has been accepted to the Whole Novel Workshop at the Highlights Foundation, a week-long, in-person retreat, this August. After five years and seven drafts of her YA novel, My Plural Is People, Anndee has secured agent representation but needs a final deep revision before submission to publishers. This immersive workshop offers the rare opportunity to receive comprehensive feedback on her full manuscript from an experienced YA author. Anndee’s work focuses on stories of diverse families, centering LGBTQ+ youth who rarely see their experiences reflected in literature. The workshop’s focused environment will provide essential creative guidance and community to help Anndee refine her manuscript and bring this important story to young readers facing political and cultural erasure.

The WOO Grant will support Anndee with covering tuition, lodging, and board expenses for the Whole Novel Workshop.

Anndee Hochman has been selected to participate in the Cuttyhunk Island Writers' Residency, a one-week intensive running September 11th-18th, taught by young adult (YA) novelist Lauren Wolk. During the residency, Anndee plans to revise her YA novel, My Plural Is People, the saga of two teens who set out on a cross-country quest to learn the truth about their families. This novel touches upon themes of grief, love, friendship, gender, race, and alternative family-making. Anndee is writing this book for every kid who has wondered where they belong, if they belong, and whose family of origin holds secrets or fails to make sense.

The WOO Grant will assist Anndee with tuition and accommodations, as well as transportation to Massachusetts.
